D.C. Online Gambling Delayed; Public To Have Input

D.C. Online Gambling Delayed; Public To Have Input
Opponents of a new online casino site in Washington D.C. were pleased on Monday when the D.C. Lottery announced that it would be delaying the launch of the online casino. The delay, according to city council members, is for time to gain public input on the controversial issue.Earlier this year the D.C. Council allowed a deadline to pass in which they could have eliminated the online gambling law. With the deadline passed, the D.C. Lottery began preparing for a launch of late July for free play and September for real money gambling online. Monday, the entire process was put on hold.”It could be October, it could be November, it could be next year,” said council member Jack Evans, in response to when the online casino will finally be launched. Other council members believed that later this year was the more probable date for the start of regulated online gambling in the city.Michael A. Brown claimed the gambling would become a reality later this fall. Before that happens, however, there is going to be a series of public discussions on the issue, and the hope is that the council will ease the fears of those opposed to the new gaming laws.Even those who are in favor of the expanded form of gambling will be allowed to attend the public forums to ask questions and gather information on the plan. The public areas where the online site will be accessible will have a sixty day review period before the site launches. While many states had lawmakers spending weeks debating online gambling, D.C. quietly pushed through a law regulating the industry last December. Even if the site is delayed for several months, it will likely become the first online casino in the US that is being run with US regulations. The city where the online site will go live is ironically the same city where the Department of Justice originated an online gambling indictment against PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, two of the largest online poker sites in the world.Lawmakers in Washington are working towards a federal resolution to Internet gambling prohibition. Representatives Joe Barton and John Campbell, both Conservatives, have proposed two separate bills that would regulate online poker. In Barton’s bill, other forms of online gambling would remain unregulated.US online poker players represent a large portion of the population in the US, and they have made their voices heard after losing their two primary places to play online. Professional poker players have also taken a stand, with several boycotting the World series of Poker until Full Tilt pays US customers the funds that were in their accounts at the time of the government shutdown of the site. Atlantic City Casino Revenues Still Plummeting Past Recession End

Atlantic City Casino Revenues Still Plummeting Past Recession End
Even though the recession seems to be over, Atlantic City casino revenues are still on a steady decline. While much of the US is slowly returning back from the effects of the recession, casinos in Atlantic City continue to see steady decline in their revenues. According to statistics from the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the gaming industry in Atlantic City saw income for July drop five percent from last year’s numbers.Only the Atlantic City Hilton and the Trump Taj Mahal were able to report better business this year than in 2009. Nine other casinos suffered losses from the year previous, and those figures were significantly down from 2008.Casino operators had used the national impact of the recession as a scapegoat for much of Atlantic City’s gaming trouble, but other factors continue to ravage the area’s gambling business. Increased competition in neighboring states has ended New Jersey’s exclusivity on the East Coast, and the convenience of online casinos continues to draw players in anticipation of the opening of the US gaming market.Governor Christie has proposed a state takeover of the city’s gambling district, but it is debatable whether New Jersey will be able to reverse the direction of the devastation simply through better branding and advertising.State Senator Ray Lesniak has led the way on several bold concepts designed to rescue Atlantic City’s gaming business, including challenging the federal ban on sports betting and suggesting intrastate online gambling run by AC casinos, but the measures are opposed by powerful foes both locally and nationally. In the meantime, New Jersey’s dependable cash cow seems to have gone hooves up. Prescott-Anschutz 8th Meeting Revealed

Prescott-Anschutz 8th Meeting Revealed
John Prescott was reportedly given a VIP tour of the London offices of casino mogul Philip Anschutz’s company one month after his controversial two-night stay at the Millennium Dome’s owner’s Colorado estate. The visit over summer of 2004 was not declared by Prescott. The eighth meeting was previously undisclosed, and it was believed that he only met up with Anschutz on six other occasions, with the Colorado visit being the last. The eighth meeting was allegedly with senior figures from Anschutz Entertainment Group, the firm bidding for the Millennium Dome to be turned into Britain’s first super casino. The meeting allegedly took place on August 17, 2005 as part of a visit to the Greenwich Peninsula. He is said to have been shown models of what the Dome would look like after its completion by chief executive Tim Leiweke. Tim Leweke is said to play a pivotal role in the company’s relationship between the government and casino mogul Anschutz. He was at five of the seven meetings between Prescott and Anschutz. It was also said that the day after Prescott left the ranch, Leiweke and his wife hosted a drinks reception for him to celebrate the success of London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Bid, where Anschutz gave $1.5 million for the campaign. Hugo Swire, the Shadow Culture Secretary, said: “This eighth meeting further confirms that we need the Deputy Prime Minister to respond to our questions as a matter of urgency. The longer he takes to do this, the longer this public pantomime will rumble on.” Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat culture spokesman, said: “Mr Prescott has clearly invested a huge amount in this particular project and the independence of the Casino Advisory Panel must be assured.”
